Gate McNeil is about to become more powerful than any human on the Earth!
June 30th, saw the release of Gate- Episode 1 "She's Just a Girl". Now I'm the first one to admit that I love Joss Whedon's writing style. I adored his tales from Firefly and wrote Old Wounds as my first fan fiction for that reason.
If people see a similarity between Buffy and Gate however, its really only from a bit of inspiration.
I've found Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in the past, to be not my cup of tea. I'd watch an episode here and there, and it never really gripped me like Firefly did. That being said, I loved the movie, and with so many fans and friends clamoring for more Buffy, I'd thought I'd give it a shot.
So I watched- the entire series, from beginning to ending. The good, the bad, and sometimes the downright ugly (usually demons).
I wrote a couple of nods to Buffy in the first scene of the first episode, and then swiftly continued with my own vision. Because, while Gate was fueled by my interest in the subject material (and sometimes frustration AT the subject material), she is no Buffy Summers, nor could she really be seen to ever become her.
Gate's become her own person, as have all the characters in the show.
I wanted to write Gate originally as a six-part series. Shannon Hilchie, in all her fine wisdom, pointed out that my first three scripts gave the audience no time to breathe. There was far too much story to fit just six episodes. So, I expanded the series to ten.
That being said, Gate and the world she lives in has enough material for ten times ten stories. But with so many other projects we're announcing this month, a summer of weekly exploits of Gate is all I have time to devout to her.
So, in the immortal words of Lyra Katzenburger, it's time I "shut it" and let you get a chance to listen to Gate- The Barrier Between Worlds.
Enjoy!
